Oded Ravek | Interview | Art Glass MEMORIAL LIGHT Part I
Art Glass MEMORIAL LIGHT by Oded RAVEK.
Dedicated to the over six million Jews whose lives were destroyed, to the Survivors of the SHOAH (HOLOCAUST) and their families, to the Ottawa Jewish Community, and to my brave and wonderful parents, Livia and Shmuel Ravek, who survived slave labor camps and Auschwitz – Birkenau and the horrors of The Holocaust.
Pam and I are deeply honoured that we were chosen to create the Art Glass MEMORIAL LIGHT in memory of The Holocaust, to be displayed and used every year for generations to come at the Ottawa Shoah Remembrance Committee’s Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Commemoration Ceremony.
About The Artwork.
My approach was to create the Artwork using simple elements that would have a big impact, both visually and emotionally, to the viewer. I wanted to honour and to remember the six million who were tortured in unimaginable ways and murdered during the years of the Nazi rule.
I created six Art Glass Panels that support one another at 90 degrees. Each Art Glass Panel symbolizes one million victims. The smallest Art Glass Panel symbolizes the 1.5 million innocent children that were murdered. Purposefully placing the CHILDREN’s Art Glass Panel in the middle of the Artwork, it represents the adults who fervently wished to protect the children. It was my intention that each Art Glass Panel touch one another, to embody and to emphasize their intertwined lives and their connectivity, and the shared fate that all too tragically befell them all.

I think that it’s a beautiful piece of art that you created and a real tribute to the Shoah. Let’s hope that it’s only the first of many. Kol Hakavod!
